A mystery donor occurs when a gift is delivered to the charity without donor information attached. This is an extremely common occurance. Since security transfers are typically handled by the donors broker, there can be a complete disconnect at the time of transfer. Who the donor is and the actual transfer of the securities from the donor's account to the receiving charity's account (typically through a DTC) are two completely separate actions. Because AssetStream's system captures all donor information at the onset of the gift and the donor's broker need not be involved at the onset, mystery donors are eliminated.
